With people becoming more conscious about their looks they can go to any length to get flawless skin. The latest craze is about microdermabrasion. Let’s check how it can make us look younger and help our different skin conditions.
What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive procedure that helps in exfoliating the thickened layer of epidermis so as to reveal healthier-looking skin from inside. The procedure is suggested to help in the formation of new layer of cells containing more elastin and collagen.
In microdermabrasion treatment, stream of sterile and rough aluminum oxide particles are blown onto the skin through a tube. These particles or crystals are supposed to remove dead skin cells from the upper skin layer and reveal smooth skin from the inner layers. Normally, it takes 6-16 weeks treatment with a gap of two to three weeks in between each treatment to get the desired effect.
Can Microdermabrasion treat all types of Skin Problems?
If there is extensive skin damage, microdermabrasion may not be effective. In that case, you may need more invasive procedure. Microdermabrasion is also not recommended for those who have acute or major skin problems such as recent outbreak of herpes, warts, active rosacea, etc. But, the procedure may benefit those who have oily skin, sun-damaged skin, wrinkled skin, age spots, blackheads or white heads, hyper pigmentation problems, etc.
What can be expected of Post Microdermabrasion Treatment?
After the first treatment, the skin will glow for a day. The patient will be asked to take proper care of her skin by keeping it clean and not exposing the skin to the sunlight. Applying of makeup on the skin is also avoided so as to give suitable time for the healing of skin.
What are the Possible Risks/Side Effects of Microdermabrasion Treatment?
Since the procedure is non-invasive, there are minimum side effects associated with microdermabrasion treatment. Eye irritation can occur in rare cases if crystals get into the eyes. Similarly, if microdermal crystals are inhaled, this can cause temporary respiratory distress. If one has particularly sensitive skin, one might have redness, flaking, dryness and itching of skin.
Apart from these, microdermabrasion treatment is considered unsuitable for people with herpes infection, keratosis, malignant tumor, those using Retin A of accutane and pregnant or nursing mothers. Pregnant women are recommended to stay away from microdermabrasion because pregnancy causes hormonal fluctuations that can prevent regeneration of skin.

I’ve read lots of articles on microdermabrasion and this is the 1st that I’ve read that stated certain skin conditions might be somewhat risky as a result of the procedure. The hormonal imbalance for pregnant women relating to skin rejuvenation was extremely interesting. All of this makes sense, but I’m surprised that I haven’t read this elsewhere. Glad I found this. I was able to learn something that I did not know.
